Bob Sarti Fonds

Biographical History

Bob Sarti (1943–2020) grew up in New York City and started working as a journalist at age 17. In 1966 he relocated to Phoenix, where he was a reporter with the Arizona Republic newspaper for the next two years. Sarti left the U.S. for Vancouver, Canada in 1968, after the assassination of Robert Kennedy. He was promptly hired by the Vancouver Sun newspaper and continued his career as a mainstream journalist (retiring in 1998) while simultaneously writing for radical publications. Sarti was one of the founders of the Open Road journal, which stood out for its striking full-colour illustrations, innovative design, and sharp-edged analysis. He remained active throughout his life, and was a long-time volunteer at Carnegie Community Centre, which assists unhoused people in Vancouver, into the 2000s.
